FertilPots
Here at Curious Plant Killer we care about the environment 🌎 and know that you do too! In an effort to reduce our plastic waste (and after a kind of ridiculous amount of research into various sustainable pots) we'll be transitioning away from traditional plastic nursery pots to FertilPots.
What the heck are FertilPots, you ask? Great question!
Sustainably havested
FertilPots are peat-free and made from 100% sustainable wood fibers. They contain no glues or binders and are OMRI certified fully biodegradable.
Promote healthy root structures
Porous walls allow plants a more natural root formation (no coiling) leading to more vigorous growth the development of more root tips.
Can be directly planted in soil
Direct planting eliminates transplant shock. FertiPots breakdown over time, decomposing into a nutrient-rich humus that won't strange your plant's roots.
Take the guesswork out of watering
Because of the way they wick, it's easy to tell with a quick glance whether or not your plant needs a water. (Note: Wet pots can be fragile so handle with care.)
A zero plastic solution for planting
FertilPots make gardening truly ethical and environmentally friendly by utilizing responsibly sourced raw materials that create zero plastic waste.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are FertilPots made from?
FertilPots are composed of mechanically processed wood fibers (100% PEFC-Certified Sustainably Managed.) They contain no chemical pulping agents, glues or binders, which is crucial for producing a porous container.
Why are there no drainage holes?
FertilPots are highly porous allowing water to drain straight through the pots walls. In fact, FertilPot walls are about 80% air by volume!
Are FertilPots sustainably manufactured?
Yes. The wood fibers used in FertilPots come from the thinning of forest lands in the Vosges region of eastern France. These forests have been sustainably managed for over 150 years.
Do FertilPots contain PFAS?
No. FertilPots are manufactured using only virgin wood fiber. There is absolutely no recycled paper used. They are guaranteed to be free from PFAS (forever chemicals) as well as heavy metals from inks and coatings.
How long do FertilPots take to break down?
FertilPots are fully biodegradable, breaking down through the action of soil microbes. In warm, moist soil, this process occurs more quickly than in cold, dryer climates. Because FertilPots allow air, roots and water to pass through, they do not hinder plants natural growth. In most regions of North America, FertilPots will be significantly degraded in about eight months.
Are FertilPots OMRI Certified?
Yes. In fact, FertilPots are the first plantable pot listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) for use in organic production. They are approved by the USDA as 100% biobased and are permitted for use in the USDA National Organic Program (NOP.)
What's this white fuzz on my pot(s)?
White fuzz (mold) is common on natural substrates and can appear if the pot has been moist for a long time. It is completely safe for the plant, and it will disappear by reducing watering and ensuring good air circulation.
